Who we are
Knotes is run by [Legal or trading name: to be confirmed] ([Legal status and registration number: to be confirmed]).
- Physical address: [Physical address: to be confirmed]
- Email: [Contact email: to be confirmed]
In these terms, “we”, “us” and “our” mean Knotes and the people who run it. “You” means the person using Knotes.
By creating an account or using Knotes, you agree to these terms. Please also read our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your information.
What Knotes is, and what it is not
Knotes is a study aid for the theory part of the Private Pilot Licence (PPL). It is made for students working towards SACAA (South Africa) or CAAZ (Zimbabwe) theory exams. It gives you notes arranged by syllabus topic, short videos and a study assistant.
Please keep these limits in mind:
- Knotes is not official training. It is not approved by SACAA, CAAZ or any flight school.
- It does not replace your instructor, your flight school or the current regulations. They are always the authority.
- Our notes and questions are written with care, but they can contain mistakes or fall out of date when rules change.
- We cannot promise that you will pass any exam.
- Always check what you learn against the current regulations and with your flight school.
- Use Knotes only to study for exams. Never use it for flight planning, flight operations or any decision about a real flight. It does not give live information such as NOTAMs, weather or fees.
Your account
You sign in with Google or with a one-time code we email to you. There is no password.
- Keep access to your email and Google account secure. Anyone who controls them can sign in as you.
- One account is for one person. Do not share your account or sign-in codes.
- Give us a real email address that you can check. We send sign-in codes to it.
- Tell us straight away at [Contact email: to be confirmed] if you think someone else is using your account.
Age
You must be at least 16 years old to use Knotes. If you are under 18, you need permission from a parent or legal guardian before you create an account, and they must agree to these terms for you. We may ask for proof of that permission.
The study assistant
The study assistant is built to be careful:
- It answers only from our course notes, not from the open internet.
- Each answer lists the note passages it used, so you can read them yourself.
- When the notes do not cover your question, it says so instead of guessing.
Even so, it can still be wrong. It can misread a passage or combine facts badly. Check its answers against the cited passages, your instructor and the current regulations. Its answers are study help only. They are not professional, legal, medical or operational advice.
If an answer looks wrong, press “This seems wrong”. We review flagged answers and use them to fix our notes and the assistant.
Question limits
The number of questions you can ask depends on your trial or plan. There are also short-term limits (per hour and per day) to keep the service fair and running for everyone. When you reach a limit, the assistant tells you.
Keep personal information out of your questions
Ask about the syllabus, not about yourself. Do not type personal or sensitive information into the assistant, such as your ID number, contact details, health information or anyone else's details. Your questions are sent to an outside AI provider to produce the answer. Our Privacy Policy explains how.
Free trial
- New users can get a 7-day free trial.
- During the beta, trials go to invited testers and no card is taken. Once billing opens, you will need a valid payment card to start a trial.
- There is one trial per person and one trial per card. If we find the same person or card starting more than one trial, we may end the extra trials.
- The trial includes up to 5 study assistant questions in total.
- After the trial, you need a paid plan to keep using the study assistant.
Before you start the trial, we will tell you clearly what happens when it ends, including whether and when you will be charged, and how to cancel before that.
Paid plans and billing
Before you pay, we show you the plan, what it includes, the full price with any fees and taxes, how often you will be charged, whether it renews automatically and how to cancel. You can review and correct your order before you confirm it.
Payments, billing and tax are handled by our payment provider. You pay through them, and their own terms also apply to the payment. We never see or store your full card details.
If we change the price of your plan, we will tell you before the change applies to you, and you can cancel before then.
Cancelling and your cooling-off right
You can cancel a paid plan at any time. You keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for, unless the law or the terms shown at checkout say otherwise.
Until self-serve cancelling is available, email us at [Contact email: to be confirmed] and we will cancel for you.
Cooling-off period
South African law gives you a cooling-off right for many online purchases. In general, you may cancel within seven days of buying, without giving a reason.
This right may not apply to a service that you asked us to start straight away and began using within those seven days. When you subscribe, we will tell you whether the cooling-off right applies to your purchase and what happens if you cancel.
Acceptable use
When you use Knotes, you agree not to:
- scrape, crawl or bulk-download any part of Knotes;
- copy, share, sell or publish our notes, videos or questions, in full or in part;
- use our content to train, test or improve any AI model;
- try to get around question limits, the one-trial rule or any other limit, for example with extra accounts or cards;
- try to break, overload or get unauthorised access to Knotes or other users' data;
- harass or abuse anyone, including our team;
- use Knotes for anything unlawful.
Our content and your licence
The notes, videos, questions, design and software in Knotes belong to us or to people who have licensed them to us. They are protected by copyright and other laws.
While your account is in good standing, we give you a personal licence to use this content for your own study. The licence cannot be transferred or shared, and it ends if your account is closed. It does not let you copy or share the content, or use it for a business.
Your feedback and flags
When you flag an answer or send us feedback, you let us use it to improve Knotes, for example to correct a note. We do not have to pay you for it, and we do not have to act on it.
We will not publish your name with your feedback without asking you. Our Privacy Policy explains what a flag stores.
Availability and changes to the service
We work to keep Knotes running, but we cannot promise it will always be available or free of errors. It may be down for maintenance, because a provider we rely on has a problem, or because demand is very high.
We may add, change or remove features and content, for example to update notes when rules change. If a change takes away something important that you paid for, we will tell you in advance where we can.
Suspending or closing accounts
You can stop using Knotes at any time and ask us to close your account by emailing [Contact email: to be confirmed].
We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, if you misuse the trial, or if the law requires us to. Where it is reasonable, we will warn you first and explain why.
Disclaimers and our liability
We provide Knotes as a study aid. As explained above, it can contain mistakes and it is no substitute for your instructor or the current regulations.
To the extent the law allows:
- we are not responsible for exam results, or for loss caused by relying on Knotes instead of your instructor or the current regulations;
- we are not responsible for loss we could not reasonably have foreseen;
- our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes any liability, or takes away any right you have, where the law does not allow that. This includes your rights under South Africa's Consumer Protection Act and any consumer rights you have under the law where you live.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when Knotes changes or the law changes. The date at the top shows the latest version. If a change is important, we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect. If you do not agree with the change, you can cancel before it applies to you.
Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa. Disputes that we cannot settle between us will be handled by [Courts or forum for disputes: to be confirmed].
If you have a problem, please contact us first at [Contact email: to be confirmed]. Most problems can be sorted out quickly that way. This does not stop you from contacting a consumer body or going to court where the law gives you that right.
